Twenty-one outstanding black students from Portland Public Schools
were honored this month at the Fifth Annual Young, Gifted and Black
recognition event at the Blanchard Education Service Center.
The students, ranging from kindergarteners through seniors in high
school, were nominated by their school counselors, teachers and princi
pals for distinguishing themselves as leaders, students and citizens. A
PPS team selects the finalists.
"In spite of the many barriers that continue to exist, black students at
PPS continue to overcome hurdles and blaze uncharted trails in achieving
school and life success," said Reiko Williams, former director of School-
Family Partnerships and founder of the Young, Gifted and Black recog
nition.
