Junior Parade
to Hit Streets
The Portland Police Bureau K-9 Unit will be honored as Grand
Marshal of the Rose Festival Fred M eyer Junior Parade, the
nation s largest and oldest all children's parade, returning to
Northeast Sandy Boulevard in the Hollywood District, on
Wednesday, June 6 starting at 1 p.m.
With its specially-trained canines, the K-9 unit not only serves
the community in law enforcement, but bonds with members of
the officer's personal families as well. The patrol dogs are
primarily used for searching for criminal suspects.
The Fred Meyer Junior Parade is the only Rose Festival event
to specifically feature children and pets.
The first Rose Festival in 1907 included a children’s parade of
2,000 boys and girls representing 23 schools. Today, children
come from all parts o f the city to join in, dressing in costume,
transforming wagons into floats, decorating their bikes with
colorful flowers, or just parading with their pets (and parents!).
