People’s Bridge
c o n t i n u e d f r o m page 3
Chet Orloff said the Native Ameri
can name was selected because it
holds the “most promise to connect
the people of our region today with
the long past of people who have
been here for thousands of years,
and to connect with future genera
tions.”
While the spelling “Tillicum” was
initially proposed, the Committee
selected “Tilikum” because that is
how the first people who lived here
spelled the word. The word is Chi
nook Wawa, an international lan
guage used by first Oregonians,
and later spoken by explorers, fur
traders, settlers and the first few
generations of Portlanders. Chinook
Wawa is still spoken today.
Tilikum means people, tribe and
relatives and has come to mean
friendly people and friends.
“Tilikum symbolizes coming to
gether,” said Orloff. “It conveys
connections, in not only the rela
tionships between people, but in
the connections we will make as we
ride, walk, run and cycle across this
beautiful new bridge.”
C hin o o k an s are indig en o u s
peoples and tribes who have lived
near the Columbia and Willamette
rivers for 14,000 years. However,
Chinook jargon is not the language
of any one tribe.
A sampling of public submis
sions in favor of “Tilikum” spoke to
its honor of Native Americans of the
Pacific Northwest who used this
word to name a friend, or refer to the
common people.
“This is a people’s bridge (not a
car bridge) in more ways than one.
This name also ties us to the past
and present through this Northwest
Native American word,” said one of
the commentators.
The bridge, the first built over the
Willamette River in Portland in more
than 40 years, will be the first cable-
stayed bridge for the region, ex
tending 1,720 feet (.326 miles) over
the river. The bridge alignment is

side and Southeast Sherman Street

A public display of artwork
honoring the positive impact the
Fair Housing Act has had on
society is featured this month at
Beaverton City Hall, 4755 S. W.
Griffith Dr.
In 1968, President Johnson
signed the Fair Housing Act,
which protects an individual
against discrimination when
they seek out a prospective
home. To recognize Fair Hous
ing Month, the Beaverton Arts
Commission is showcasing art
that captures the essence of
home.
“I’m impressed with the art
and how it conveys this impor
tant message of fairness,” said
M ayor Doyle. “Each piece
shows the artists’ unique and
personal perspective, while still
cap tu rin g the em otion of
home.”
All of the artwork is for sale.

stiffness, back pain or fatigue?
B ut, it is perfectly normal for you to
wonder whether a chiropractor can
really your particular problems. Your
headaches. Your neck pain and/or stiff
ness. Your back pain or other symp
toms. Problems you may have had for
some time.
Q
Dr. Billy R. Flowers
The truth is, doctors of chiropractic
are extremely successful at eliminating
many symptoms. Often more quickly and
effectively than other healing methods.
But, your doctor of chiropractic can
do so much more for you than just treat
ing symptoms. Your chiropractor is con
cerned with making sure your entire body
is functioning properly. Therefore, your
chiropractor goes beyond treating your
immediate symptoms to make sure
your body is still functioning effi
ciently. That is the only way true health
can be achieved.
But we aren’t the only ones who
have said it. Chiropractic has been
accepted by the ultimate authority;
you the people.
