Civil Rights Act Turns 50
Reflecting on the unique power
of the office he holds, President
Barack Obama on Thursday hon
ored Lyndon B. Johnson as leader
who seized the presidency's oppor
tunity to bend the currents of his
tory and fulfill America's founding
promises of equality.
"I have lived out the promise of
LB J's efforts," Obama said, speak
ing at a ceremony marking the 50th
anniversary of the Civil Rights Act,
the landmark legislation that helped
clear the way for him to become the
nation’s first black president.
Obama praised Johnson's ability
to cajole and strong-arm the legisla
tion through Congress over the
objections of lawmakers from his
own Democratic Party, calling him a
man who understood the power of
his office. But amid the celebrations
of the law, Obama cautioned that
work remains in order to fulfill the
goals of the legislation Johnson
championed.

Calling Out Obama Opponents
Baseball Hall of Famer Hank
Aaron compared Republicans
that oppose President Barack
Obama to the Ku Klux Kian.
Speaking to USA Today
April 8 on the 40th anniversary
of his then record-breaking
715th home run, the 80-year-
old Aaron said that Republi
cans are hindering O bam a’s
job performance.
“Sure, this country has a
black president, but when you
look at a black president, Presi
dent Obama is left with his foot
stuck in the mud from all of the
Republicans with the way h e’s
treated,” Aaron told USA To
day Sports.
Aaron continued: “The big
ger difference is that back then
they had hoods. Now they have
neckties and starched shirts.”

morning of April 7; both were pro
nounced dead at the scene. The
driver of the truck was not seriously
injured.
Those that know the girls say
Dilla and Osman were best friends.
Both, graduated from Portland
area schools in 2013, with Osman
getting her diploma from Westview
High School and Dilla being a gradu
ate of the International School of
Beaverton.
The girls met their freshmen year
at Pacific University where they
became “inseperabie” taking the
same classes, carpooling and study
ing together. They also had become
members-of the Pacific University
MMM
Black Student Union which they
helped re-start this year.
Osman was laid to rest in a private
ceremony the day after the crash, a
service for Kiden followed on Satur
day at the City Bible Church in Port
land.
Pacific held a campus memorial
for the women on Monday night
which was followed with a candle
light vigil. The school’s “Spirit
Bench” has also become a memorial
for the young women with flowers
and photos.
Friends of the girls have renewed
a campaign to make safety changes
to the intersection where the crash
occurred, a stretch of highway that
claimed the life of a Banks High
School student last year, and a re
ported 27 crashes, resulting in 37
injuries over several years.
