Activist Will Speak
Angela Davis
Since the 1960s, Angela Davis
has gained notoriety for her civil
rights activism becoming a re-
nowned public figure in the pro-
cess; Thursday she will be mak-
ing a Black History Month visit
at the liberal arts and sciences
college Pacific University.
Davis came to national atten-
tion after being removed from
her teaching position in the Phi-
losophy Department at UCLA
as a result of her social activism
and her membership in the Com-
m unist
Party,
USA.
She currently is
a retired professor
with the History of
C o n sc io u s n e s s
Department at the
University of Cali
fornia, SantaCruz,
and is the former
director of the
university’s Femi
nist Studies De
partment. For the
past several de'
cades her work
has been largely in the area of
prison reform,
Her lecture is scheduled at
7:30 p.m. in the Stoller Center at
Pacific’s Forest Grove campus
and is sponsored by the school ’ s
Center for Peace and Spiritual-
ity, the Tom McCall Center for
Policy Innovation, the Center for
Civic Engagement, the Office of
Diversity, the Office for Student
Academic Inclusion and Suc-
cess, and Student Activity funds,

Race Talks on Schools and Death Penalty
The Portland discussion group Race Talks
2 will be facilitating another event at Kennedy
chool, this time discussing the links between
school push-outs and the death penalty.
Presentations will be made by retired su-
penntendent of the Oregon State Prison Frank
ompson, attorney Mark Kramer, clinical
social worker Jan Sllck, and Dr. Lurlene
Shamsud-Din of Lifeworks NW.
Following the presentations, there will be
small group discussions facilitated by trained
volunteers from the Portland-based group,
Uniting to Understand Racism.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb.
11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McMenamins
Kennedy School 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave.
