Jazz Legend Phil Cohran Live
Portland show first for longtime artist and thinker
North Portland’s M ississippi Records presents
Jazz Legend Phil Cohran live as part o f a new
M ississippi Records Music and Film Series at the
Hollywood Theatre.
Cohan will perform in two parts on Thursday, Feb.
6 at 7:30 p.m. He will present a slideshow and lecture
on the cosmos, slavery, Afrocentrism and his Artistic
Heritage Ensemble. After this presentation, he will
play a live set on various instruments, including harp,
trumpet and Francophone.
This will be C ohan’s first appearance ever in
Portland, a rare opportunity to see a musician of this
caliber in an intimate setting like the Hollywood
Theatre. Cohran has been a very active artist and
thinker since the early 1960's.
He was a m em ber of Sun R a’s Arkestra and
brought many of the more “international” rhythms and
instruments to the groups sound. He has self-pro
duced many amazing records over the years including
the “Malcolm X M emorial” LP reissued by M issis
sippi Records. He currently lives in Chicago where he
is still very active in the music and cosmic thinking.
The Hollywood Theatre, a not-for-profit organiza
tion whose mission is to entertain, inspire, educate and
connect the community through the art of film, while
preserving a historic Portland landmark, is located in
the center o f the Hollywood neighborhood at 4122
