The concerts will feature soloists Angela Niederloh, Carl Moe and Richard Zeller, the Portland State University Chamber Choir, the Pa­ cific Youth Choir and the Portland Gay M en’s Chorus. The evenings also include music by a cavalcade of guest stars: Thomas Lauderdale on piano, director Gus Van Sant, and vocalists China Forbes, Storm Large (Dec. 30 only), the von Trapps, and Cantor Ida Rae Cahana. “Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is one of the most loved pieces of music ever written,” said Kalmar. “I’m looking forward to performing this triumphant and monumental work to celebrate the Ne w Y ear with the community.” Thomas Lauderdale adds, “Pink Martini has played with over 50 orchestras and I say with great con­ fidence that the Oregon Symphony is the best in the country. Alberta St., will be hosting a free New Years Eve event, with live music by Portland’s “Soul King” Ural Thomas. Thomas was a vital part of the long gone Funk and Soul scene of the late '60s and early 70s. In his career, he has opened for Otis Redding, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and played in the studio with the Quincy Jones band and the Supremes. Thomas has lived in the same Port­ land house since the 1960s and has been playing every Sunday for the past 40 years at the "House of Entertainment," the practice space and neighborhood music venue that he built himself, out by the back alley behind his house.
