T h e A m e ric a n tra g e d y in
B enghazi is the m ost investi­
gated terrorist attack o f its kind
in recent history. E ight H ouse and Senate co m ­
m ittees have probed the attack, generating 18
hearings, 40 adm inistration briefings, and the
production o f at least 25,000 pages o f ad m in is­
tration docum ents.
D espite the dogged efforts o f R epublican
H ouse O versight and G overnm ent Reform C om ­
m ittee C hairm an Darrell Issa to m anufacture a
scandal, these investigations have uncovered no
evidence o f w rongdoing by President Barack
Obam a or former Secretary o f State Hillary Clinton.

Follow ing any terrorist attack on a U.S. target,
serious questions inevitably em erge on w hether
it m ight have been prevented. T hough th e re ’s
no evidence that C linton personally knew o f the
requests m ade from the field for additional secu­
rity at the B enghazi diplom atic com pound, she
took the “buck -sto p s-h ere” approach o f a co n ­
fident leader and accepted full responsibility for
any lapses.

panel failed to blam e C linton for the tragedy,
R epublicans trashed it and baselessly claim ed
that the board conspired to co v er up h er p u r­
ported culpability.
B efore she left office, the forw ard-looking
C linton began the process o f im plem enting all o f
the b o a rd ’s 29 recom m endations and to o k d is­
ciplinary action against several State D ep art­
m ent officials. U nfortunately, that d id n ’t close
the case.
W hen C linton suffered a concussion after
falling shortly before she w as scheduled to give
P o s t’s Fact C h eck er concluded, all outgoing
cables from W ash in g to n b ear the secretary o f
state’s “signature.” T h a t’s ju s t protocol. T h e re ’s
no evidence C linton e v er saw them .
C onservative law yers pro m o ted a w ould-be
star congressional w itness w ho w as said to
have been m uzzled and dem o ted by top C linton
aides. Y et, he testified to no m uzzling and said
h e ’d req u ested reassig n m en t him self, due to
fam ily concerns.
N ext cam e the revelation that another top
S tate aide m assag ed a d m in istra tio n talk in g
points to protect C linton from political fallout.
B ut co n trary to the suggestion that the aide w as
a C linton flunky, she w as a career F oreign S er­
vice o fficer w ho had previously served as D ick
C h en e y ’s adviser.
D esp ite Is sa ’s sp in m e iste rs’ best efforts,
nothing in the talking points co n troversy al­
tered the fact that pro fessio n als in the intelli­
gence co m m u n ity — not political aides — both
originated and signed o ff on the talking points.
T hey d id n ’t include details about the perp etra­
tors, testim ony show ed, to avoid tipping o ff
terrorists to the crim inal investigation.
R epublicans have the B enghazi story exactly
backw ards. W hether by helping craft the O bam a
ad m in istratio n ’s tougher-than-B ush approach
to terror, holding h e rself accountable, p rovid­
ing a steady hand as the attack u nfolded, taking
congressional testim ony on B enghazi in D e­
cem ber, co nservatives, led by Fox N ew s, m ade
the crazy claim that C linton w as faking illness to
avoid appearing on C apitol H ill. C linton was
suffering from “acute Benghazi allergy,” Charles
K rautham m er surm ised. W hen she did testify
and show ed som e visible em o tio n w hile d is­
cussing the violent deaths o f h er diplom ats,
conservatives sought to deny h er hum anity by
claim ing she w as acting.
O th er charges seem ed m ore serious — until
they fell apart on exam ination. T he portrait o f
