On Thursday, Nov. 7, the Clark County First
Thursday Museum after Hours program brings
Dr. Ian C. M acMillan to speak about the creation
of the Kaiser Permanente health system in Henry
Kaiser and the expansion of Vancouver.
MacMillan, author and retired internist, who
served 14 years as chief of medicine at Kaiser
Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center, is the
author of Permanente in the Northwest, a book
published in 2010 to fill a gap in the history of the
Kaiser Permanente health system - the unique

was Permanente Metals, the division of Henry J.
K aiser’s construction consortium that built ships
during W orld W ar II. The medical services of­
fered to those civilian workers was the kernel of
what would eventually grow to become one of
the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plans,
and with two shipyards, in Portland and Vancouver,
the Northwest was a key participant.
