Charles ‘Chuck’ Washington has
been inducted into the Portland In­
terscholastic League (PIL) Hall of
Fame this week.
The Portland Public Schools
Athletic Hall of Fame Association’s
Board of Directors hosted its 26th
annual Hall of Fame Induction ban­
quet to recognize the achievements
of past PIL Athletes, coaches, and
administrators and to honor the his­
tory of the league.

W ashington graduated from Jefferson)
Jefferson High School in the class
o f 1970 where he had a list o f
successes in the arenas o f both
basketball and baseball. He let­
tered in both sports three years in
a row, was a first team A ll-PIL
selection his senior year as a m em ­
ber o f Jefferson’s PIL Cham pion­
ship basketball team, and was a
first team A ll-PIL baseball player
the same year.

On Monday, Nov. 4, the life of
Ethiopian im m igrant M ulugeta
Seraw will be remembered 25 years
after his death. Seraw was in Port­
land to attend college when he con­
fronted by three white supremacists
and beaten to death in front of his
apartment on Southeast 31st Av­
enue on Nov. 12, 1988. One of the
men claimed that he and the two
others killed Seraw "because of his
race."
After two convictions of man­
slaughter, Seraw’s father and son
successfully filed a civil lawsuit
against the killers and an affiliated
organization, holding them liable for
the murder. They were represented
at no cost by the Southern Poverty
Law Center and the Anti-Defama­
tion League, and won a civil case

The History Night presenta­

and open to the public event will
exam ine racial history in Oregon
and will discuss how Portland citi­
zens are combating racial discrimi­
nation today.
Speakers will include Portland
State University educator, spoken
word artist, and organizer Walidah
Imarisha; journalist Elinor Lager and
author of “A Hundred Little Hitlers:
the Death of A Black Man, the Trial
of White Racists, and the Rise of the
Neo-Nazi Movement in America;”
and Western States Center Execu­
tive Director Kelley Weigel.
