hope was for the mostly Caucasian
educators, who represent over 90
percent of the state’s teaching force,
to learn valuable and effective tech
niques on teaching pupils o f color
that can then be brought back to
their respective schools and class
room.
Elise Bradley and Ron M organ,
educators at O liver P. Lent School
in southeast Portland and m em
bers o f the institution’s equity
team, were an example of the teach
ers who participated in the ses
sions. They attended the hip-hop
artifacts workshop, for exam ple,
which tied in images o f white su
prem acy from the days o f confed
eracy to how hip-hop culture is
often m arketed now.
Morgan, a lifelong hip-hop fan
and also a white male from the sub
urbs, says his knowledge of the rap
culture brought him a sense of aware
ness to the overt social and finan
cial oppression of inner-city popu
lations. He found that the Teaching
with Purpose workshops brought
him even more context to the condi
tion of African people globally.
“It’s just really powerful to see
the connection of where racism kind
of started against black people here
on this continent or in this country
and how that moved forward with
social rebellion, empowerment, and
activism and right into the hip-hop
music of 2013. The presenter did a
great job in a short amount of time to
really make those connections,”
Morgan says.
A third grade teacher himself, he
says white teachers in general some
times don’t see a cultural connec
tion from the past “like 400 years
ago or whatever, that could be rel
evant to what’s going on today in
the classroom.”
W orkshop leader Khalid El-
Hakim who tours the world as an
expert in culturally effective teach
ing methods for students of color,
brought out actual chains that were
used on enslaved people in America.
Bradley said she was brought to
tears upon seeing the shackles.
“That was insane,” Bradley says.
“H aving a learning experience
where I was totally engaged and
having a strong memory of what I
learned that I can take that with me.
That was the most successful.”

Part 3. ALLERGIES: Why Chiropractic
often works more effectively than drugs.

: Nothing else has ever really
helped my allergies. What can
Chiropractic possibly do?
A : First, take a look at the word
iitself. “Allergy” is a shortened
form of “a/tered energy.” Way back
when patients first complained of aller
gic symptoms, it was obvious to the
physician who coined the term that
somehow, the body’s energy configu
ration had shifted and caused the prob
lem. Chiropractors now know that the
Q
central nervous system controls the
body’s flow of energy. We also know
that when the spinal column is out of
alignment, it interferes with the central
nervous system’s flow of energy. When
those nerves leading to the eyes or nose
or throat are being interfered with, “aZ-
teredenergy" symptoms result. By co r
recting the source o f the problem , not
ju st the sym ptom s, Chiropractic can
often provide com plete, lasting re
lief. W ithout drugs or drowsiness.
For help with your allergy-related
problem s or answ ers to any ques
tions you m ight have about your
health, your will find that Chiroprac
tic is often the answer. Call us for an
appointm ent today.
