some supplies will be provided.
Attenders are asked to bring their
own dishes and non-alcoholic bev
erages, utensils and chairs. The
event will feature games, music,
entertainment, and socializing with
old friends.
“We want to gather together the
people we grew up with, people who
were bom and raised in Vancouver,”
said Kay Swar Grant, one of the
planners. The public is invited to
join in the festivities.
G ra n t’s p arents, H enry and
Margie Swar, were among workers
from all over the U.S. who came to
Vancouver and Portland after Pearl
Harbor to build up the fleet at the
Kaiser shipyards.
A grass-roots effort to document
some of these migration stories re
sulted in a book, “First Families of
V ancouver’s African Am erican
Community: From World War Two
to the Twenty-First Century.”
After the book’s release in April
2012, descendants of the families
decided to launch an annual cel
ebration.
V ancouver had alm ost no A fri
can A m erican population before
Henry K aiser built his shipyard
here in 1942. By the time the war
ended, this city felt like home to
m any o f the newcom ers. They
chose to stay in V ancouver and
put down roots.
Now dispersed throughout the
larger community of Clark County
and southwest Washington, these
longtime residents often lament that
they see each other only at funerals.
“It was really starting to bother
us,” said Juanita Young. “We kept
telling each other, ‘We have to stop
meeting like this!” ’
The 2012 reunion drew about 100
people from Vancouver and Port
land. Grant, Young, and others have
been meeting since May to organize
this year’s event.
“Portland’s African American
community has its celebrations,”
said Jane Elder Wulff, co-founder
with Cometta Smith of the First Fami
lies project and author o f the book.
“ A lo n g w ith N A A C P ’s new
Juneteenth observance, the Back in
the Day Reunion is a great way for
Vancouver to celebrate its own di
verse history.”
