The Vancouver Land Bridge was built in 2008 as an interpretive installation that explores the unique
environmental and cultural heritage of a site that connects the Columbia River to the Fort Vancouver
National Historic Site.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
The Confluence Project and Fort V ancouver Na
tional Historic Site will host a com m unity celebra­
tion on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at
the V ancouver Land Bridge in Vancouver.
Fam ily friendly activities, including Am erican
Indian dancing by the N'chi W anapunj Canoe Fam ­
ily, storytelling by Ed Edmo, a presentation by
artist Lillian Pitt, and other events in the fort will
m ark the five year anniversary o f the construction
o f the pedestrian land bridge connecting the Co­
lum bia R iver to the Fort V ancouver N ational H is­
toric Site.
On hand will be volunteer guides and National
Park Service staff and volunteers to help visitors
explore the bridge and park. Local food carts will
provide coffee and juice.
Visitors will encounter three them ed overlooks
on the Land Bridge - River, Land, and People. A hub
o f European and Am erican Indian cultures, Fort
V ancouver was constructed in 1829 as a regional
center for the Hudson's Bay Com pany's fur trading
operations in the Pacific Northwest. Eventual con­
struction o f railways and Highway 14 disconnected
the fort from the Colum bia River.
