Kids at Ventura Park at Southeast 115th Avenue and Stark Street have som e fun during a Mobile
Playgrounds program Thursday. The recreational experience is provided by Portland Parks and Recreation
for traditionally underserved areas without formal playgrounds, especially in east Portland.
Mobile Playgroundsfor Summer Fun
Portland Parks and Recreation is
bringing some summer fun to tradi
tionally underserved areas, in east
Portland in particular.
The recreation experience is made
possible by a Mobile Playgrounds
program that started June 24 and
continues through Aug. 15, featur
ing games, sports, arts and crafts
and other family activities at places
they are most needed.
“In effect, we are bringing the
park and recreation experience to
places that are not parks but need
them like outside churches and in
the parking lots of apartment com
plexes,” said Mark Ross, a spokes
person for the parks department.
The Mobile Playgrounds move
around to different locations twice
a week for either a morning or after
noon session, reaching out to
underserved areas where most city
parks lack amenities and services.
This summer marks the largest
Mobile Playgrounds program in
many years, in part because of the
support of Multnomah County and
the East Portland Action Plan.
Ross gives special thanks to
Linda Robinson and Arlene Kimura
of the Hazelwood Neighborhood
A ssociation, who helped raise
$34,000towards Mobile Playground
programs in East Portland.
