Open Library Hours Restored
Beginning July 1, the Multnomah
County Library will restore M on
day service and restore open hours
that were reduced last year at all 19
libraries.
In the new schedule, six libraries
will be open Sunday mornings and
all libraries will be open later in the
evenings, Tuesdays through Sat

Summer
Reading
Sign Ups
Multnomah County Library’s
Summer Reading entices kids to
read for pleasure when school is
not in session, maintaining the
skills developed during the school
year and encouraging lifelong li
brary use.
Overall, library patrons will have
40 percent more open hours each
week than the current schedule. This
new schedule reflects community
input, based on specific preferences
expressed in nearly4,000responses
to a community survey.
The extended evening hours will
also offer more opportunities for
groups and organizations to use
The program is open to kids of all
ages, from birth to high school stu
dents entering grade 12. Anyone
who has not signed up through
school may do so at any neighbor
hood library.
Upon signup, participants re
ceive a gameboard customized for
their age group: birth-preschool
(also available in Spanish), grades
K -6 or grades 7—12. Participants
then engage in any number of lit
eracy-building activities and track
their progress.
Activities include reading, being
read to, listening to audiobooks,
free meeting space. Revenues from
a new library district also restores
funding to purchase new books and
other materials.
“We are grateful to the voters of
Multnomah County for their sup
port of library district funding to
restore hours and services,” said
Multnomah County Library District
Director Vailey Oehlke.
