Music on a Long Thin Wire Yale Union will welcome com poser Ellen Fullman and her Long String Instrument, installed specifi cally for a Thursday, June 20 perfor mance at 7:30p.m. The week prior, Yale Union, 800 S.E. 10th Ave., will be open to the public for the installation of Alvin Lucier’s Long Thin Wire. In 1977, Alvin Lucier built an instrument by clamping a long metal piano wire to tables at both ends a room, connecting the ends of the wire to the loudspeaker terminals of a power amplifier and connecting a sine wave oscillator to the amplifier. Fullman will perform her room sized string instrument built to fit the upstairs gallery at Yale Union. “The first thing one observes is that the string vibrates as a whole,” Fullman said. “You can see it mov ing up and down its entire length. The sound it produces as it vibrates as a whole is the fundamental pitch. That’s the tone you hear and iden tify. Its pitch is determined by the tautness, weight, mass, and length of the string.” Showdogs is a full service salon.
