Career Pathways Gets a Boost

Fifteen m ore students will
now have access to ca re er
training thanks to a donation to
the Portland Com m unity C ol­
lege Foundation by Bank o f
A m erica.
A recent $15,000 donation
to oversee the dispersal o f par­
tial tuition for 15 PCC students
pursuing career training, adds
to the $50,000 the Bank of
A m erica donated last year to
fund the education o f 40 stu­
dents pursuing credits in the
accounting, adm inistrative, fa-

healthcare fields through the
C areer Pathw ays Program .

gram has been a lifesaver for

who has a high school educa­
tion, was laid o ff a year ago as
a dining room m anager for a
local restaurant hit hard by the
econom ic dow nturn. She en ­
tered com puter applications

learned about m arketing her­
self, resum e building and how
to excel at jo b interview s. A
C areer Pathw ays coordinator
helped her pick out the right
classes and find textbooks.
A fter com pleting her first
certificate, she continued to
take classes to earn a m ore
advanced certificate. As she
looks forw ard to com pleting
her second, Cow an wants to
apply w hat she has learned in
the classroom in her upcom ing
PCC C ooperative E ducation
Internship. She plans to earn
an a d m in istra tiv e a s sista n t
one-year certificate and even­
tually an associate's degree.
