Teachers for
High Schools
Portland Public Schools Super­
intendent Carole Smith presented a
budget option to the school board
Monday that would provide 41 more
teachers for high schools next fall.
An equity formula would also
remain in effect that provides all
high schools with additional staff to
improve outcomes for students who
have been underserved.
Sm ith’s budget would provide
enough teachers to offer every stu­
dent access to at least 7 classes next
school year, but could grow to eight
classes if a new labor agreement is
reached with the Portland Associa­
tion of Teachers.
The budget proposal does not
affect staffing at elementary or
middle schools.
