excited about com ing in after
school, th ey ’re learning and like
helping out.
M elva Perez, another freshman
at the school, says she w asn’t
surprised by the poor air quality
findings.
“It m akes sense, since this
school is (alm ostj 100 years old,”
she said.
“I could just tell from the smell,”
said Elijah O ’Shea, a sophom ore.
The students are excited to find
out what results the plants could
yield.
The staff at Roosevelt is w rit­
ing a grant proposal for $ 12,000 in
order to expand the project next
year with sophisticated electronic
devices they that can m onitor
changes in air quality. The equip­
ment could run them about $3,500.
So far, $300 has been raised in
donations. •
Funding is a constant battle for
teachers. To do certain projects
or sim ply have the supplies for
their students, teachers are often
forced to pay out o f their own
pockets. Some even have taken
unpaid days to conduct field trips
when the school cannot afford to
bring in a substitute teacher.
Jensen estim ates that she and
h e r h u sb a n d h av e s a c rific e d
roughly $ 1,000 of their own money
to support student projects.
“W e really feel chained by our
funding,” she said. “Every project
and field trip comes with financial
sacrifices.”
The ultim ate goal o f the air
quality project is to take their find­
ings to the surrounding com m u­
nity in hopes o f collaborating with
Portland industries to begin w ork­
ing tow ards reducing toxic em is­
sions in the area.
“It m ight take a little bit of
m oney and a lot o f support, but
everybody can come together and
change e v ery th in g ,” freshm en
M anny Lopez says with a smile.

As for broadening the relation­
ship between PCC and Osaka Jikei,
G atew ood thinks it’s a good idea.
“To me, international relation­
ships such as the one with Osaka
Jikei College are what we need to do
if we are to successfully interface
with people from around the world,”
he said. “And in the 21st century
economy, we must be able to do this
in order to be competitive.”\

exchange o f his own, visiting
Osaka Jik ei’s facilities, m eeting
with its leadership, and taking in
some o f the myriad sights, sounds,
and tastes o f Osaka, Jap an ’s sec­
ond-largest m etropolitan area.
“Japan is an incredible place,”
he said. “There’s an amazing blend
of tradition and m odernity that
