Watch out for

As w arm er days arrive, i t ’s
tem pting to open windows and let
in the fresh air. Unfortunately,
open windows can pose a risk to
young children. M ore than 3,000
fall from windows in the United
States each year.
W hile 70 percent o f window
falls occur from second or third
stories, even falls from first-floor
window s can pose safety risks.
You can reduce the risk by using
some simple safety m easures. The
the Safe Kids Coalition of Clark
County is recom m ending these
safety tips:
K eep w indow s locked and
closed unless opened intention
ally.
Keep furniture and other ob
jects away from windows where
children can climb.
Teach children about window
safety. Have them play a safe dis
tance away and use tape to mark
o ff unsafe areas where possible.
Install a window stop to pre
vent window s from opening more
than four inches. Be sure an adult
can open the window in an em er
gency.
In sta ll w indow g u ard s that
adults can remove in an emergency
where windows are open more
than four inches.
W hen buying new windows,
ask for built-in safety hardware.
