Musical comedy
brings lots of laughs
The critically acclaimed La Cage aux Folles
by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman opens
at Lakewood Theatre in Lake Oswego on
Friday, May 3 with shows continuing through
June 9.
The musical is based on farce by Jean
Poiret and tells the story of Georges, a glitzy
nightclub owner in a same-sex relationship,
whose son Jean-Michael has recently be
come engaged to the daughter of ultra-con
servative and political family.
Jean-M ichael’s family tries to masquer
ade as “normal" when meeting the family of
the bride to be. Jacob the butler (played by
Portland’s Kevin Cook, aka Poison Waters),
who really wants to be called the maid, has to
learn to behave. But Georges’ partner has
other plans.
The play is the winner of multiple Tony
Awards, including, best musical, score, book
and revival. In 1996, the Birdcage, the Ameri
can film with Robin Williams, Nathan Lane
and Gene Hackman, debuted featuring the
same story line but transferred the location
from the French Riveria to Miami.
