Advocating for Students of Color
Portland educator
honored for
equity leadership
to actively m entor the next generation of
leaders, said Carole Smith, superinten­
dent o f Portland Public Schools.
W hen he accepted the award, Poe said
he could feel the presence o f his grand-
m other, who inspired his equity work
through her encouraging words, “ You can
be anything you choose to be.”
The Oregon Leadership Network, which
is adm inistered by Education Northwest,
is a partnership am ong state agencies,
school districts, and nonprofit nongov­
ernm ental organizations that provides
technical assistance, training, and re ­
search on leadership for equity.

A long-time advocate for students of
color, Portland activist and an equity
officer for Portland Public Schools,
Lolenzo Poe is honored for his leader­
ship during an April 10 ceremony.
L olenzo Poe, ch ief equity officer for
Portland Public Schools, received the sec­
ond annual Tom Ruhl Leadership for E q­
uity A w ard on April 10 at the spring lead­
ership institute held by the Oregon L ead­
ership Network.
A graduate o f Jefferson High School,
Poe is a long-tim e advocate for students
o f color throughout Oregon. A form er
m em ber of the Portland Public Schools
Board o f Education, he has also served on
the boards of a num ber o f com m unity
organizations, including the Urban League
o f Portland, the Black Parent Initiative, the
Black United Fund, the Portland Schools
Foundation, and the African Am erican
Alliance.
Poe is also the form er D irector o f
M u ltn o m a h C o u n ty ’s D e p artm en t o f
School and C om m unity P artn ersh ip s,
where he was an architect of the nationally
renow ned SUN (Schools Uniting N eigh­
borhoods) Service System, which provides
an integrated netw ork o f social and sup­
port services for youth, fam ilies, and com ­
m unity m em bers throughout M ultnom ah
County. Recently he received the Black
Parent In itiativ e ’s first Dream K eeper
Aw ard for his advocacy work.
