Allen Temple Spring Revival
Allen Temple C.M.E. Church invites
the community to three nights of spring
revival from Tuesday, April 23 through
Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the church,
located at 4236 N.E. Eighth Ave.
This year’s theme “Transform ing
Lives, Families and Communities,” bring­
ing a message of hope, healing and res­
toration for everyone.
Dr. LeRoy Haynes, senior pastor has
invited an am azing, dynam ic and
anointed speaker, Elder Sharon L. Grant
from the BishopT.D. Jakes’The Potter’s
House. Her gifts of teaching, mentoring,
counsel and empowerment flow from a
place of experience and overcoming life’s
struggles.
She is the best-selling author of Giv­
ing Up Is Not An Option: The Purpose
for the Pain.

Bantu Palmer Sr. died April 7,2013.
He was born May 19, 1923 in
D eFuniak Springs, Fla. to Perry
’T
Sharon Grant
and Julia M ae Oates. He served in
the U.S. Navy and was assigned
to the USS York Town, an aircraft
carrier in the Pacific. He sustained
injuries during the Japanese at­
tack at M idway that led to a dis­
abled, honorable discharge.
He built and owned the first
black lodging place in northeast
Portland named the Desert Motel.
Later, he maintained ownership of
New Rose City Cab Company,
Bantu Towing and other business
endeavors.
New Rose City Cab traces its
origins back four decades to an
unfortunate period of time when
skin color barriers made the simple
act of obtaining taxi cab services
a challenge for some of our citizens.
Palmer was an advocate for those
who could not speak for themselves,
known for raising awareness of black
heritage and the rights that go along
with being human.
He first wife was Eddie Lee Bums
of Galveston, Texas. Together, they
had two children: Arthur James Jr.
and Nancy Carol. At the time of his
passing, he was married to Anita M .
Casey, his wife for over 50 years.
Anita Palmer had two sons, Ron
Able and Melvin Able.
Survivors include his w ife;
d a u g h te r N an cy and step so n
Melvin; a brother, Alfonzo Oates of
Miami; numerous grandchildren,
nieces and nephews. He was pre­
ceded in death by his son Arthur
James Jr. and stepson Ron.
A funeral was held Saturday at
Rose City Funeral Home with the
burial following at Rose City Cem­
etery.

Betty Jean
Clark
Betty Jean Clark died peace­
fully on April 8,2013 at her home in
northeast Portland surrounded by
family and loved ones. She was 65.
Betty, also affectionately known
as the “Queen Bee,” was bom on
Jan. 17,1948 in Little Rock, Arkan­
sas, the daughter o f Jesse and
Minnie Harris and grandparents
Sanders and Sarah Ford.
Betty will be missed greatly. She
touched many people in many
ways. She will be most remem­
bered for her A -l cooking and as
“The Hostess with the Mostest.”
She worked for TriMet as a bus
driver and retired after 25 years of
dedicated service. She loved cook­
ing, traveling and spending time
with family. She was an active
member of the Elks Lodge
She is survived by her eight
siblings, Chester, Mary, Earnest,
Sandra, Ronald, Renee and Renette
Harris and Willie Tanner; her four
children, Jimmy Riley, CorlitaRiley,
Paul Clark and Amanda Clark; six
grandchildren and a host of other
relatives and close friends.
Funeral services were held April 19 at Vancouver Avenue Baptist
Church with a reception following at the Billy Webb Elks Lodge.
