T he construction m eets a longstanding
com m unity need. O fficials said the build­
ing w ill create a w elcom ing and highly
visible police presence in R ockw ood,
im proving public safety and encouraging
new investm ent in the area.
O nce com p leted the site w ill house a
ran g e o f police functions, including su p ­
p ort for patrol officers serving R ockw ood
and oth er special units and program s.

S u p rem e C o u rt su p p o rtin g sam e-sex
m arriag e.
L ast w eek, O regon jo in e d a b rie f p re ­
p ared by M assachusetts urging the S u­
p rem e C ourt to strike d o w n C a lifo rn ia ’s
constitutional ban on sam e-sex m arriage.
S am e-sex cou p les c h allen g ed the 2008
pro v isio n, arg u in g that it vio lated their
rig h ts u n d er the federal constitution.
In addition, O regon jo in e d a b rie f p re ­
pared by N ew Y ork and M assachusetts
u rg in g the C o u rt to strike dow n the
federal D efense o f M arriage Act. T hat
fed eral law bans the ex ten sio n o f h u n ­
dreds o f federal benefits and protections
to m arriages validly reco g n ized under
state law .
In both cases, the briefs argue that
n eith er states nor C ongress can ju stify
d iscrim in atio n against sam e-sex rela­
tionships based on assertions that u n ­
equal treatm ent is n ecessary to prom ote
“responsible p rocreation” and child rear­
ing by different-sex biological parents.
A s the C alifo rn ia trial court found
after hearing the testim ony o f experts
an d rev iew in g h undreds o f pag es o f
m aterial, there sim ply is no support fo r
the notion that banning sam e-sex m ar­
riage does anything o th er than h arm our
citizens an d their fam ilies. T he sam e is
tru e fo r th o u s a n d s o f O re g o n ia n s ,
R osenblum said.
