In Loving Memory
Dalai Lama to Visit
Pastor Ervin Wilson Sr.
Pastor Ervin Wilson Sr. was bom on Oct. 11,1925 in Eufaula,
Okla., and departed from this life on Feb. 16,2013. He was reared
[ as the son of Charles and Allie Wilson (natural birth parents
unknown), graduated from Dunbar High School in Lubbock,
Texas and married his high school sweetheart, Myrtle Moore on
May 4, 1942. To this union was bom one son, Ervin “Benny”
Wilson Jr.
In 1944 Ervin and family moved from Lubbock to Portland, where he worked as a welder
in the shipyard. It was also in 1944 that Ervin answered the call to ministry. Later that year,
he was inducted into the Army, but because he refused to shed blood (Conscientious
Objector), was sentenced to 5 years hard labor. It was through the grace of God and the
prayers of the saints that Ervin was released within 18 months.
After surviving the Vanport Flood of 1948, Ervin moved his family from Portland to
Eugene in 1951 where they remained before returning to Portland in 1983.
Pastor Wilson dedicated his life to the work of the Lord. In Eugene, he founded the
1 Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, the first of its denomination in Eugene. In 1979, he
I founded the Greater Peace Church of God In Christ in Portland where he remained as
Shepherd until the time of his passing.
In addition to pastoring, previous employments include owner of W ilson’s Janitorial
Services in Eugene, employee of Eugene Water & Electric Bureau, and bus operator for
Laidlaw in Portland.
Pastor Wilson will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving grandfather, and
faithful and respected servant of the Lord. He was preceded in death by son Benny. He
Left to cherish his memory are wife of 70 years Myrtle; sister, Luevenia Shankle of Eugene;
| grandchildren, Shannon Grant, Lafaye Floyd, Kenneth Powell-Wilson, and Scott Carr;
daughter-in-law, Terry Carr-Wilson; beloved daughter in the Lord, Arleen Wilson; several
great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews; the Greater Peace Family , saints and friends.
Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at the W alker Temple Church of God in Christ in

Portland campus on May 9 for the first two
public events as part o f an environmental
summit. Maitripa College, the first and only
Tibetan Buddhist college in the Pacific North­
west, is host o f the summit.
The schedule includes three days o f en­
lightening teachings and conversations with
the Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader known for
his promotion of peace, and dialogue with
distinguished leaders of the Pacific North­
west environmental, scientific, policy and
faith communities.

University o f Portland on May 9 and at
Veterans Memorial Coliseum on May 11 is
