A Witness to Portland’s Changing Face
Postman retires
after 43 years

wished goodbye to a familiar face last
week. Richard Briggs, who after 43 years
of working for the Postal Service in
Portland, is looking forward to a new
beginning in retirement.
Briggs joined the post office in 1973
after he returned from Vietnam, where he
served for one year in U.S. Air Force. He
began working as a letter clerk, .later
became a supervisor, and now ends his
career as a pay clerk. “Nothing to fancy,
anybody could do it,” said Briggs.
As a young man, Briggs worked for
Tektronics before joining the Air Force.
