L y n d o n Jo h n so n sent N av y sailors
to scour N esh o b a C ou n ty 's riv er­
beds. T hey d id n 't find them , but
they uncovered the co rp ses o f d o z ­
ens o f A frican A m erican m en. It was
a tim e and place w here any crim e

In the previous h undred years,
thousands o f A frican A m ericans
had been lynched, as docum ented
in scores o f gruesom e photos that
w ere p roudly sold as souvenirs.
It is no surprise to m e, then, to
leam that Jam es M adison's reason
for proposing the Second A m end­
m ent in 1789 was to preserve the state
m ilitias, the w hite population's "prin­
cipal instrum ent o f slave control."
A s docum ented in T he H idden
H istory o f the Second A m endm ent,
an article published in 1998 in the
U niversity o f C alifornia, D avis L aw
R eview , these m ilitias (often called
"slave patrols") w ere tasked w ith
periodic sw eeps o f plantations to
seek runaw ay slaves and intim idate
any w ho dream ed o f freedom .
Today, the proliferation o f arm ed
hate groups, w hich som etim es call
them selves militias, is at least as dan­
gerous as isolated, unbalanced, and
gun-toting m en w ith scores to settle.
The num ber o f anti-governm ent so-
called Patriot groups, such as arm ed
m ilitias, grew by 755 percent in the

to facilitate arm ed rebellion against
o u r ow n governm ent, should it b e ­

I support the right to o w n guns,
bu t w e don't need 30 rounds in a
sem i-autom atic w eapon— o ra well-
arm ed m ilitia— to bag a deer. I draw
the line w hen m y fellow citizens turn
their hom es into arm ories and begin
training for insurrection. W e used
to call that treason.
