Mayor Calls
for Gun Ban
(AP) - Portland's new mayor,
Charlie Hales, says he agrees with
other U.S. mayors that military-style
assault weapons and high-capacity
ammunition magazines should be
banned.
Hales held his first news confer
ence as mayor on Monday to back
the national campaign. Like his pre
decessor, Sam Adams, Hales has
joined Mayors against Illegal Guns.
About 800 mayors belong.
Hales urged the Oregon Legisla
ture, which convened Monday, to
adopt similar laws.
He called them, as he put it, "com
mon sense changes we can make
even in a country with the Second
Amendment."
The mayor said he doesn't expect
to push local gun ordinances be
cause the city has limited authority.
He says local measures would be
ineffective because the city can't
control the behavior of people in
surrounding cities.

Men Carry Rifles in Public, Legally
Two men carrying assault rifles
on their backs in the Sellw ood
neighborhood alarmed several on
lookers, but police rem ind the
public that openly carrying a fire
arm is legal in Oregon and carry
ing a concealed firearm is legal
with a valid C oncealed Handgun
License. O fficers contacted the
arm ed men in the area o f South
east Seventh Avenue and Spo
kane Street. The men, both age 22,
told police that they were exercis
ing their 2nd A m endm ent rights
and hoping to educate the public.
Officers explained to the armed
men that carrying the guns in public
would likely continue to generate 9-
1-1 calls from an alarmed public,
which would require a police re
sponse and possibly tie up re
sources that are needed elsewhere
to respond to true emergencies
However, neither man seemed
interested in these concerns, said
police in a report.
The Portland Police Bureau asks
that members o f the public who see
people armed with guns to immedi
ately call 9-1-1.
