Schools Budget Shortfall
Portland Public Schools projects a $22 m il
lion budget shortfall, equivalent to 220
teaching positions, for the 2013-14 school
year, based on G o v ern o r K itzh ab er’s p ro
posed budget, according to a budget fo re
cast presented to the Portland School board.

The U.S. D epartm ent o f Justice and the city
o f Portland filed a court-enforceable ag ree
m ent M onday to address claim s that police
too frequently use excessive force against
the m entally ill. T he city has agreed to
revam p its policies on the use o f force and
T aser stun guns. It’s also creating an in ter
vention team to respond to calls that in
volve people w ith m ental illness.

Jobless Down Slightly
