Big Science Buddies
A Jesuit High School club called
"Portland Junior Scientists" has
won a second major grant in two
years to support their work with at-
risk youth to explore science, tech
nology, engineering, and mathemat
ics by guiding them through hands-
on experiments.
The group is comprised of stu
dents Ellen Walker, Meghana Rao,
Jillian Robinson, Fitsum Dejene, Tara
Raizada, Sunjay M ouli, Jordan
Calverley, Samir Shah, and Aijun
Mouli, and moderated by Jesuit
Leading Event Services Again
The Oregon Convention Center
is welcoming the return of Mark
Williams as its director of event
services after a two-year hiatus.
Williams was first employed by
the convention facility in 1995 as a
lead utility worker and progressed
through the organization.
“M ark’s vast knowledge of the
facility, the convention industry and
the needs of our clients is a valuable
asset to the convention center’s
management team,” said OCC ex
ecutive director Scott Cruickshank.
“He is well-respected and well-liked
by employees and customers alike.
W e’re thrilled with his decision to
return to the facility.”
Williams most recently was busi
ness operations manager for the
science teacher Darrell Feebeck,
Winning the Case Foundation’s
Finding Fearless grant competition
brings a $25,000 software donation
from Microsoft and a $ 1,500 money
grant to help them bring hands-on
science to local elementary school
children. Earlier this year, their
project won an Internet election and
a Pepsi Refresh Grant for $5,000.
"We are so proud of our Portland
Junior Scientists," says Principal
Paul Hogan. "They are all stellar
students who realize that their intel
lectual gifts are meant to be shared.
Their third and fourth grade stu
dents adore their 'big science bud
dies,' and the feeling is mutual."
