Playhouse presents another August Wilson play
Portland Playhouse’s production of King Hedley II
by August W ilson opens this weekend, continuing the
Playhouse’s exploration o f the African-Am erican
W ilson’s dramatic works. Tickets are available for
previews on Thursday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 7, with
performances from Saturday, Dec. 8 through Dec. 30
at Portland Playhouse, 602 N.E. Prescott St.
King Hedley II, set in the mid-1980s in a Pittsburgh
plagued by desperation, blight, and drive-by shootings,
tells the story of a man and his community struggling to
reconcile with the past and build for the future.
Emmy Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festi­
val actor Peter Macon will make his Portland debut as
King, headlining a strong cast that includes beloved
actors Victor Mack, Ramona Lisa, and Vin Shambry,
as well as John Cothran.

addition to directing classics like Lorraine Hansberry’s
A Raisin in the Sun and assisting on world premieres by
Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage and legendary
playwright and performer Anna Deveare Smith, Carroll
has also developed work by a new generation of
African-American playwrights.
Portland Playhouse, now in its fifth season of making
theatre for diverse audiences in Portland, is dedicated
to producing quality, intimate performances in which
the interaction between artists and audience is para­
mount.
