Ashley Chavez
Hit-and-
Run Driver
Sentenced
A Portland woman who was intoxi
cated and behind the wheel of a car in a
fatal hit-and-run accident, and then tried
to cover up the crime, has been sen
tenced to six years in prison with her
drivers’ license revoked for life.
Ashley Chavez cried as she was sen
tenced Monday. After changing her
plea to guilty, Chavez’s attorney said
“She is truly sorry for what happened.”
The victim , 6 3-year-old N ancy
Schoeffler, died in the collision. She was
left lying on West Burnside Street where
the accident happened last March.
Five other people were accused of
helping Chavez cover up the crime that
led to a multi-state search for Chavez
earlier this year. Authorities were tipped
to Chavez’s whereabouts in Bellingham,
Wash, where they captured her evading
arrest.
Five other defendants including
Chavez’s boyfriend, Christopher Rhea,
her brother Josh Chavez, and Angela
Kaps- Collins, a passenger in the car at
the time, have been charged for crimes
associated with the cover-up.
Shoeffler’s family released a state
ment Monday about the case. “This has
been devastating for our family, not just
the loss of Nancy, but also the cover
up.”

been charged with a crime.

Protest March
Turns Violent
Police respond
with pepper spray;
make one arrest
Occupy Portland and other groups held an
“anti-austerity march” near Holladay Park in
northeast Portland Saturday, where roughly
300 people rallied against funding cuts to
social and public services.
The event was mostly peaceful, but ended
in one arrest and several people pepper-
sprayed by officers.
Police tried to stop protestors from turning
northbound onto Northeast 14th Street in the
Lloyd district. When protestors marched for
ward with wooden-board signs, a police bike
brigade pushed back.
As protestors broke through the line, a few
officers stumbled off their bikes.
Officers deployed pepper-spray to front
line demonstrators and seized their “ramming
devices and shields,” police said. Demon
strators then backed up and walked east-

No officers were inside the car at
the time. Portland Fire and Rescue
arrived and put out the fire. There
were no injuries or damage to the
police car.
Police caught up to and arrested
the suspect, Sergey Yefimobich
Turzhanskiy, 24, on charges of at

One man, 44-year-old Johnny Christopher
Wells, was arrested for running away with a
police bicycle and swinging it at officers as
they caught up to him.
Demonstrators continued to march around
the Lloyd Center and the march ended at
Holladay Park.
Portland police say they attempted to con
tact protest organizers prior the event seeking
details and a permit for the demonstration, but
the groups did not respond, later arguing that
a permit should not be required to express
political dissent.
