Nonprofit builds
complex for
affordability

struction on a new affordable apart
m ent building for low and moderate
incom e residents off N ortheast M ar
tin Luther King B oulevard and C ook
Street in the Eliot N eighborhood.
The building’s ow ners, non-profit
Innovative H ousing, Inc., say the
new complex, the Eliot M LK building,
helps to address a shortage o f afford-
able rental units within Portland’s
core.
“C lose to the M A X and bus lines,
these units are sorely needed by
people with low er paying jo b s who
need to live close to w ork,” said Inno
vative H ousing Executive D irector
Sarah Stevenson.
The five-story, LE ED -Silvercerti
fied building, one block w est o f Irv
ing City Park at 3250 N.E. M artin
Luther King Jr. Blvd., is scheduled to
be com plete by next Septem ber.
W hen finished, the building will
contain 42 one-bedroom units and
eight tw o-bedroom units. The ground

Founded in 1984 to help provide
affordable housing for low- and m od
erate-incom e households, Innovative
H ousing, Inc. now ow ns m ore than
1,400 affordable apartm ents in O r
egon and W ashington.
Stevenson said, “It is im portant to
have affordable housing options in
desirable com m unities like the Eliot
N eighborhood.”
