sic and Lorenzo da Ponte ‘s li­
bretto, Don Giovanni has shocked,
outraged and fascinated au d i­
ences since his first sighting in
Prague a couple hundred years
ago.
Based on the legend of Don
Juan, Don Giovanni is the story of
a charism atic noblem an who se­
duces women for his own plea­
sure. But when he kills a father
who is in the act of defending his
daughter’s honor, the spirit of the
deceased man confronts Giovanni
in a scene of great moral retribu­
tion. W hen Giovanni refuses to
repent, dem ons drag him to the
underw orld as punishm ent.
Portland O pera’s production,
originally created for New York
City Opera in 2009 by Christopher
Alden, was praised by The New
York Tim es as “dark, erotic and
vividly th e a tric a l. . . striking, in­
sightful.”
