Named Great Public Space
The American Planning Association last week designated Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park as one
of the country’s great public spaces. The award exemplifies exceptional character and highlights the
role planning and planners play in adding value to communities, including fostering economic growth
and creating jobs. The 30-acre park along the west bank of the Willamette River is an integral part
of Portland’s downtown and the city’s cultural, recreational and social life. “Waterfront Park is part
of the fabric of the Rose City, ” said Portland Mayor Sam Adams. “Instead of the freeway that used
to run through the space, we have a lush, green gathering place for all, one we are happy to call a
great public space. ”
