Kevin Hart presents the award for video o f the year to Rihanna for

Teen group
barges in on
Rihanna’s party
( AP) — There may have been no
signature moment at this year's MTV
Video Music Awards, but there was
a signature sound: the screams of
teenage girls wild about One Direc
tion.
It stopped just short of a British
invasion, but the hunky teens in the
boy band won three awards on
Thursday night's show and barged
in on Rihanna's party.
Rihanna kicked off things with a
spicy performance to open Thurs
day night's show, then ended it by
taking the show's top honor, video
of the year, for her steamy hit "We
Found Love."
"Doesn't my girl Rihanna look
sexy tonight?" Katy Perry asked the
crowd after the performance.
And the night's lead nominee
did, showing up in a pixie cut and a
figure-hugging, elegant scoop-
backed white dress before chang
ing into a flowing red outfit for her
medley of new single "Cockiness (I
Love It)" with rapper A$AP Rocky
and "We Found Love." She brushed
imaginary dust from her shoulder as
she walked to the stage to thank
fans and her creative team.
The camera returned to the pop
star often — except when it was on
One Direction, which provided the
night's most screamed-over perfor
mance. The band won best pop
video, best new artist and most
share-worthy video.
Chris Brown pulled off something
of an upset in the best male video
category. Rihanna's former boy
friend won for his self-directed video
"Turn Up The Music," beating out
several top stars, including Drake,
who tied Rihanna for most nomina
tions with five. Brown also won for
best cinematography. M.I.A. was
the night's only other multiple win
ner, taking two off-camera awards
for direction and cinematography.

Ladd said she is also devoted to
strengthening community ties.
“One of my goals as a board
member is to help the community
see PCC as fully theirs, that it is part
of the fabric of the community for
learning, dialoguing and gathering.
PCC is a resource for workforce
development as well as gaining credit
in high school, hearing a thought
provoking lecture, or earning a de
gree. I want the people who come on
campus, regardless of race or socio
economic status... to feel it’s their
home.”
Ladd holds a Masters Degree in
Education Policy and Management
from Harvard University and is a
board member with Camp Fire USA,
is a board member of the Portland
Leadership Foundation and is a
steering committee member with the
Cradle to Career Initiative.
Williams died in July after more
than two decades on the PCC board.
Ladd will have to run for election in
the May Primary to keep the Zone 2
position, which serves north and
northeast Portland and Columbia
County.
