Pearson’s Open Cockpit Day
Pearson Air Museum at Fort Vancouver holds Open Cockpit Day on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can sit in antique planes, and the museum’s flight simulator lab will be
open to the public. For children ages 8 to 17, free airplane rides will be given on a first come,
first served basis. Slots fill up quickly. Regular museum admission applies: $7 for adults; and
$5 for seniors and students. Children ages 5 and under are free.
Park Service Birthday Party
The Fort Vancouver National Historic Site near
Downtown Vancouver will celebrate the 96th birthday
of the National Park Service by holding an array of fun
and educational programs on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Highlights include archaeology digs and a chance
for families to travel back in time and spend the night
inside the reconstructed fort.
"Birthdays are a time to celebrate and we want
everyone, especially the children of America, to join
the party," said Park Superintendent Tracy Fortmann.
In addition to the Fort’s daily programs there will be
a free 11 a.m. Flora, Fauna, and Future hike across the
Land Bridge, a free 1 p.m. historic weapons demonstra­
tion, and a free 3 p.m. Vancouver Barracks Walk.

The Oregon State Fair opens Friday and continues through Sept. 3.
Weekend Start for State Fair
Gates open at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24 for the Oregon
State Fair in Salem, which runs through Labor Day,
Sept. 3. The 147th annual event offers free concerts,
exhibits, kid fun, contests, and special promotions.
As always, the fair is the standard bearer of all
things agricultural; showcasing the special traditions
of farming that built Oregon's economy and still drives
it today.
