Soapbox Derby at Mt. Tabor
The mission of the PDX Adult
Soapbox Derby is “keeping the kid
in us all.” The 16th annual race re-
turns to Mt. Tabor Park in southeast
Portland on Saturday, Aug. 18.Com-
petition starts at 10 a.m. with races
continuing through 4 p.m.
A grass-roots event that’s dedi­
cated to camaraderie, competition
and community, the derby is known
for bringing out thousands o f
people for a perfect picnic day.
"Once a year a brave group of
racers convene on the daunting
slopes of Mt. Tabor to test their
metal to their mettle. We thank our
beloved volcano for allowing us to

tickle her spine," organizers said.
Mt. Tabor is a 600-foot hill con­
taining the remnants of an extinct
volcano, the only inner city volcano
in the U.S.
There will be a few vendors in the
park for the derby, but most folks are
advised to pack food and bever­
ages. Beer and wine are allowed, but
no hard alcohol. All pets must be on
leash.
