7:30 a.m . Sunday to kick -o ff the first
annual M L K D ream R un sponsored
by the N o rth -N o rth east B usiness
A s s o c ia tio n to c e le b r a te th e
m u ltic u ltu ra l n e ig h b o rh o o d s in
north and northeast Portland.
T h e runners co v ered courses o f
five, 10 and 15 kilom eters through 11
n e ig h b o rh o o d s. T h e tim e re p re
sented a co m p ro m ise w ith the c ity ’s
transportation bureau. O rganizers,
in clu d in g H enry V E v en ts, had
w anted to race on S aturday to avoid
interfering w ith Sunday church ser
v ic e s . T h e e a rly S u n d a y s ta rt
av o id ed conflicts, and as it h a p
pened, spared co m p etito rs heat that
reached 94 degrees later in the day.
S o m e 150 v o lu n teers assisted

Jordan Welling was the top male finisher and Larisa Manuel the
top female racer in the inaugural MLK Dream Run. The Sunday
morning event drew more than 250 people.
