program
D o you dig Fort V ancouver? Then
visit Fort V an co u v er N ational H is­
toric Site to ex cav ate like a real ar­
ch aeo lo g ist!
D uring K ids D igs, youth aged 8-
12 are introduced to arch aeo lo g y by
participating in a m ock dig, m apping
their artifact finds, and filling out
site form s. As youth ex cav ate and
screen w ith the help o f park staff
and volunteers, the p articip an ts d is­
co v er how w e learn from arch aeo l­
ogy, and w hy w e should preserve
these p ieces o f o ur past.
Y outh participating in the pro­
gram learn how archaeologists e x ­
cavate, as w ell as w hat role the sci­
ence o f archaeology has in u n d er­
standing the past.
At the end o f the sessions, p ar­
ticipants get to interpret their ex ca­
vation and tell us w hat they learned
about w hat hap p en ed in the past
based on the units they excavated.
Fort en tran ce fees o f $3 apply to
adults 16 years and older, but the
program is free for youth. K ids D igs
are 1 im ited to 20 youth. T he program
runs from 11 a.m .to 12:30 p.m. on the
follow ing Saturdays: July 28, A ug.
4, A ug. 18, A u g .25, and Sept. 1.
This Saturday, visitors will also be
able to visit real archaeologists w ho
are digging in the field at the South
V an co u v er B arracks, discovering
about life in the eras o f the H udson’s
B ay C om pany an d U.S. A rm y. - • •
