In Loving Memory
Harvey Lee Black Jr.
Harvey Lee Black Jr. died on May
24,2012 at the age of 60. He was bom
Feb. 20, 1952 in Klamath Falls, the
youngest of seven children to proud
parents Harvey Lee Black Sr. and
Terry Emma Lou Dudley Black.
His siblings were delighted to
nickname the new baby “Junior”
and “June Bug” and he good-
naturedly answered to those moni­
kers for his entire life. He spent his
early childhood in Klamath Falls
and Portland. He attended high
school in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.,
where he lived with his sister Denise
following the deaths of their par­
ents.
Harvey grew up attending the
Freewill Holiness Church of God in
Christ in Klamath Falls. He acknowl­
edged Jesus Christ as his Lord and
Savior and spoke of that commit­
ment often during his last months.
He met his former wife, Pamela
Denise Torrence in Portland in 1975.
They were blessed with two beauti­
ful daughters, Terreshia Denise
Black and Sheree Lynette Black. In
1990, he moved his family to At­
lanta, Ga.
The greatest loves of Harvey’s
life are his two grandchildren, four
year-old Jasmine Lashay Mathis,
and 18-month old Jeremiah Lee
Mathis.
Harvey received his Associates
Degree in Culinary Science from
Portland Community College. He
entered the culinary field as a sous
chef and honed his skills to reflect
his amazing creativity. He enjoyed
frequent recognition for his exquis­
ite food art designs. He taught ice
sculpture and received numerous
recognitions in competitions for ice
sculpture centerpieces. Harvey en­
joyed preparing extraordinary cui­
sine for a number of celebrities and
notable individuals, his favorite of
whom is Muhammad Ali. Harvey
loved football and was always an
avid fan of the Oakland Raiders and
the Oregon State University Bea­
vers.
In addition to his parents, he is
preceded in death by his sister Dor­
othy Dell Black; brothers Grady
William Black Owens and Jimmy
Bang-Bang W alker; and grand­
daughter Taleah Deshea Black.
Harvey Lee Black is survived by
his daughters Terreshia and Sheree;
son-in-law Rocky Mathis; grand­
children Jasmine and Jeremiah, and
his former wife, all of Stone Moun­
tain, G a.; a brother Ivory M . Walker
of Hay ward, Calif.; three sisters, Irma
Lee Black Halcrombe of Livermore,
Calif., Leeoteen Denise Black Brown
of Vancouver, and Gail Veronica
Blackof Oro Valley, Ariz.; 32 nieces
and nephews; many grand and
great-grand nieces and nephews;
and many cousins. He also leaves a
multitude of wonderful friends and
former colleagues in Atlanta, Port­
land, Eugene, Tucson and across
the country.
Prayer Project Portland

Prayer Project Portland to involve
people in actively praying for Port­
land as a com m unity.

15 at the Reflections C offee Shop,

The Church o f God in C hrist was founded in
1897, incorporated in 1907, and is the fourth
largest denomination in the United States. COGIC
is one of the largest A frican-Am erican denom ina­
tions and has a w orldwide m em bership o f seven
million people in 60 countries.
Bishop Blake has becom e the new face of and
an international spokesperson for Pentecostalism
as it is known today. He is senior pastor of the $60
m illion W est Angeles Church com plex in Los
Angeles with over 24,000 m em bers, and is on
President O bam a’s Faith Based Com mittee.
