Faithful and Faithless Collide

Hope is a powerful portrait o f one
of the nation’s last surviving be­
nevolent societies— a self-help
group form ed after Em ancipation
to h e lp freed slaves take care of
the sick, feed the hungry and bury
the dead.
N arrated by W hoopi Goldberg,
the film follows the Fair Hope Be­
nevolent Society in Alabam a dur­
ing its annual anniversary celebra­
tion, which has over the years
been co-opted by a notorious
outdoor festival called the “Foot
W ash.” As the faithful and the
faithless collide, Contradictions
provides an eye-opening exam i­
nation o f black history and cur­
rent culture.
“My grandmother, at 98, is the
oldest surviving member of the Fair
Hope Benevolent Society,” said
Rockell Metcalf, the film’s co-direc-
tor. “It was not until a few years ago
that I actually sat down with her and
had a detailed conversation about
the role that Fair Hope and other
benevolent societies played in help­
ing freed slaves transition from sla­
very to freedom. I thought it was
important to highlight this incred­
ible history and the significant role
that benevolent societies, in gen­
eral, have played in shaping African
American history.”
The Contradictions of Fair Hope
heads to several film festivals across
the country this summer.
