George Lee Burris Sr. was bom
Jan. 15, 1944 to Curtis Burris and
Maggie Stapleton-Burris, in Fayette,
Mo. He was the fifth of their nine
children. In 1953 the family moved to
Springfield 111., where they became
strongly rooted and settled. M any
generations of the Burris family still
live in Springfield, which is commonly
referred to as the fam ily's hometown.

High in Springfield. At the age of 15,
he discontinued his education to stay
home and assist with raising his three
younger brothers.
At the age of 16, he married Sharon
Jones and together they had three
sons. At 19, he met his current wife
