are carved through
the glaze.
Mary Astarloa-Haley presents
abstract images in black, white and
gray in oil pastel on canvas paper. By
using a rag dipped in turpentine and
using her finger, she establishes a
tactile contact with the surface.

P D X Jazz at the M ission
Amina Figarova Sextet performs
as part of the PDX Jazz at the M is
sion Theater series on Thursday,
May 17 at 7:30p.m.
The gifted pianist-com poser-
bandleader and her sextet will play
songs from a themed program titled,
"Amsterdam After Dark." Figarova
returns to Portland after a memo
rable performance at the 2007 Port
land Jazz Festival.
Based in Rotterdam, Netherlands,
the Amina Figarova Sextet is com
prised of pianist Figarova, flautist
Bart Platteau, trum peter Ernie
Hammes, tenor saxophonist Marc
Mommaas, bassist Jeroen Vierdag,
and drum mer Chris "Buckshot"
Strik.
Figarova grew up listening to her

parents' collection of jazz records
like Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald
and Joe Pass, and took up the piano
at the age of two. Although she was
more interested in becoming a pop
musician as a young adult, her per
ception changed after witnessing
the Moscow Jazz Festival in 1988.
