Portland High School Hoopers unite for 12th

The 12th Annual Joyce W ashington M emorial Bas­
ketball Game is set to tip off this Saturday, May 5 with the
Girls game at 2 p.m. follow ed by the Boys game at 4 p.m.
Team rosters are filled with players from prim arily north
and northeast Portland for a game that honors Joyce and
Cory W ashington and assists in raising funds for schol­
arships in their names.
Joyce W ashington M emorial Game Alumni include
NCAA basketball standouts Terrance Jones ( Kentucky),
Mike Moser ( UNLV), Terrance Ross ( W ashington), Juanita
Badon (Utah), Krystal Forthan (LSU), Jude Schimmel
(Louisville), and Shoni Schimmel (Louisville).
This years’ game has 15 Oregon high schools repre­
sented by seniors and underclassm an. Bryce W hite
( Benson) headlines a boys roster that includes 9 All-City
team players along with Mt. Hood Conference 1st team
All-Leaguer, Jerem iah Harris (David Douglas) and Bryan
Archie (Roosevelt) 2011 Co-Player of the Year. The girls’

Kerby Ave., Portland. Tickets prices are $3 for adults and
$2 for students. Children 9 years old and younger are free.
Tickets can be purchased at the door on game day.

About the Portland Observer.
In 1989, Joyce Washington purchased the Portland Observer, a northeast Portland weekly newspaper. The paper’s corporate name, Cory Publishing,
commemorates Cory Washington's contributions to the paper. Cory (right) was one of the first, most involved staff members of the paper. He was
shot to death following a basketball-game dispute in Peninsula Park in 1991. Joyce Washington studied sociology at Portland Community College and
Portland State University. She passed in March of 1996 but her legacy lives on through the newspaper. Her sons, Mark and Charles Washington oversee
the daily operations and editing of the paper and are heavily involved in supporting the youth of Portland, as their mother always had.
