In 1989, Joyce Washington purchased the Portland Observer, a northeast Portland weekly newspaper. The paper’s corporate name, Cory Publishing, commemorates Cory Washington's contributions to the paper. Cory (right) was one of the first, most involved staff members of the paper. He was shot to death following a basketball-game dispute in Peninsula Park in 1991. Joyce Washington studied sociology at Portland Community College and Portland State University. She passed in March of 1996 but her legacy lives on through the newspaper. Her sons, Mark and Charles Washington oversee the daily operations and editing of the paper and are heavily involved in supporting the youth of Portland, as their mother always had.
