hadn't.
"H e says, 'O h he's right behind
m e, he's right b ehind m e again,"'
C rum p says the girl told him . "She
says run. H e says I'm not going to
run I'm ju s t going to w alk fast. She
hears T ray v o n say, 'W hy are you
follow ing m e?' O th er voice says,
'W hat are you doing around here?'"
She told C rum p they both re
p eated th em selv es and then she
h e ard a sc u ffle b e g in "b ec a u se
(M artin's) voice ch an g es like so m e
thing interrupted his speech." She
heard an altercation and then the
phone call w as cut off.
W ithin m om ents, according to
C rum p's tim eline, M artin w as shot.
She didn't h ear the gunfire.
C rum p is not releasing the girl's
nam e to protect h er privacy.
C rum p said he p lan s to turn over
inform ation about the call to federal
investigators w ho are looking into
the case. T he Ju stice D epartm ent
announced th eir inv o lv em ent late
M o n d ay .
"The d ep artm en t w ill conduct a
thorough and independent review
o f all the evidence and take ap p ro
priate action at the co n clusion o f
the investigation," the agency said
in an em ailed statem ent.
T he federal agency said it is send
ing its co m m u n ity relatio ns service
this w eek to S anford to m eet w ith
authorities, com m unity officials and
civil rights leaders "to address te n
sion in the com m unity."
