Harriet Tubman Wax Figure Unveiled

In celebration of Black His­
tory Month, 10 direct descen­
dants and family members of
h isto ric icon H a rrie t R oss
Tubman, visited The Presidents
Gallery by Madame Tussauds to
help unveil a new wax likeness
of the renowned abolitionist and
conductor of the Underground
Railroad.
“Harriet Tubman was an in­
credible woman whose accom­
plishm ents and contributions
played a pivotal role in the his­
tory of the United States, ce­
menting her status as a true
A m erican ic o n ,” said D an
Rogoski, the gallery’s general
manager. “We are honored to
have Harriet Tubm an’s descen­
dants with us today for the un­
veiling and induction of her wax
figure into our expanding Presi­
dents Gallery — an interactive
journey through America’s his­
tory.”
H a rrie t T u b m an (b o rn
Araminta Ross, calling herself
Harriet later in life) was an Af­
rican-American abolitionist, hu­
manitarian and spy for the Union
during the Civil War.
After escaping from slavery,
into which she was born, she
reportedly freed more than 300
slaves via the elaborate network
of safe houses known as the
Underground Railroad.

Dorchester County, M.D., an
area from which many of the
descendants and family mem­
bers attending the recent event
currently reside.
“We are ecstatic and over­
joyed to see Aunt Harriet being
celebrated and receiving recog­
nition for her contributions to
humanity, which is long over­
d u e ,” said C h a rle s R oss,
T u b m a n ’s g re a t-g re a t-g re a t
nephew.
Children from W ashington
D.C.’s Harriet T ubman Elemen­
tary School were also on-hand
to witness the unveiling of the
figure of the historic woman for
whom their school is named.
