Film Tackles Population Issues A free screening of a documentary about population issues and how they impact the world will be presented on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hol lywood Theatre, 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd. “Mother: Caring for 7 Billion,” brings to light an issue that fuels an environ mental, humanitarian and social crisis: population growth. Since the 1960s the world population has nearly doubled, adding more than three billion people. At the same time, talking about population has become politically incorrect because of the sen sitivity of the issues surrounding the topic - religion, economics, family plan ning and gender inequality. The film illustrates both the overcon sumption and the inequity side of the population issue by following Beth, a mother, a child-rights activist and the last sibling of a large American family of 12, as she discovers the thorny com plexities of the population dilemma and highlights a different path to solve it. "Mother is a must-see film on why population growth still matters and what is hindering action to reduce it," said Hania Zlotnik, director of the Population Division at the United Nations. “By ignoring the facts and continu ing a course of business as usual, we are endangering our future on this planet. I am so happy to see a coura geous film that deals with population in both a sober and hopeful way,” said Paul R. Ehrlich, author o f the Popula tion Bomb. Call for an appointment!
