Komen reinstates funding for Planned Parenthood
(AP) — The Susan G. Komen
for the Cure breast-cancer char
ity on Friday abandoned plans to
elim inate grants to Planned Par
enthood. The startling decision
cam e after three days o f virulent
criticism that resounded across
the Internet, jeopardizing Komen's
iconic image.
"We want to apologize to the
Am erican public for recent deci
sions that cast doubt upon our
com m itm ent to our m ission of
saving wom en's lives," a Komen
statem ent said.
As first reported by The A sso
ciated Press on Jan. 31, Komen
had adopted criteria excluding
Planned Parenthood from future
grants for breast-cancer screen
ings because it was under gov
ernm ent investigation, citing a
probe launched by a Florida con
gressm an at the urging o f anti
abortion groups.
Kom en said it would change
the criteria "to make clear that
disqualifying investigations must
be crim inal and conclusive in na
ture and not political."
"W e w ill co n tin u e to fund

Health authorities on Friday
urged all boys age 11-12 to get a
routine vaccination against the most
common sexually transmitted dis
ease, human papillomavirus, or HPV.
The HPV vaccine has been ap
proved for girls since 2006, but the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention had not expressly urged
it for boys, though boys were in
cluded among those who could re
ceive it to prevent certain cancers
and genital warts.
Health experts have expressed
hope that if pre-teen boys and girls
are both encouraged to get the vac
cine, the rate of infection will de
crease in the general population.
About half of all sexually active
adults will get HPV in their lifetime.
There are more than 100 types of
HPV, and most clear the body on
their own, but some strains can lin
ger and lead to cancer.
