car, her house and her job.
“I was a couch bunny,” she said,
referring to the plethora of couches
she found herself on during cold
winter nights. “I didn’t have any
place to call my home, except for my
campsite.”
She said, however, when they
first gave her the key, she didn’t
move in for almost two months. “It
is like shifting gears, and it was
overwhelming,” she said.
“But it has been great. I have a
feeling of belonging now,” she said,
explaining she pays $21 to stay in
her home, where her grandsons can
visit whenever they please. “It has
been great having them stay over.”
Although Duke said they work
heard every day to address people’s
need, she said there are still a num
ber of people not living within their
building who have to face the streets
each night.
“It is not camp; it is where people
live. We want to be able to respond
to people’s needs,” she said.
New resident Jack Alexander said
he feels extremely lucky to have
received a home within the building
after being homeless for more than
two decades.
“When you’re outside its hard to
get yourself back up because you
spend your whole life trying to sur
vive,” he said.
Although Alexander said being
homeless in Portland can be easier
than in other cities because of the
services made available, he said he
was all over the place and unable to
attend to his health issues before
moving to Bud Clark.
“The best part for me is the pri
vacy, and I have a lot of medical
supplies, and I finally have a place
to store everything,” he said. “We
could use more places like this.”
